Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in delegation-level discussions with Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. Following their talks, both leaders witnessed the signing of memorandums of understanding between India and Singapore in New Delhi. During a joint press conference, Modi highlighted the significance of Wong's visit, marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. He noted that Singapore is India's largest trading partner in Southeast Asia, with substantial investments flowing into India from Singapore. The defense ties between the two countries are also on a continuous upward trajectory. A comprehensive roadmap for the future of their partnership was established today, focusing on a timely review of the bilateral Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement and the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement to boost mutual trade.
Future Collaboration Areas
Modi emphasized that the roadmap for their partnership extends beyond traditional sectors. As times change, areas such as advanced manufacturing, green shipping, skill development, civil, nuclear, and urban water management will become focal points of collaboration. Technology and innovation are set to be the strong pillars of this partnership. The leaders agreed to enhance cooperation in AI, quantum, and other digital technologies. Recent agreements in the space sector mark a new chapter in their collaboration in space science. To connect the talents of their youth, a new round of the India-Singapore Hackathon is planned for later this year. The successful examples of digital connectivity, such as UPI and PayNow, have seen the addition of 13 new Indian banks.
Expanding Space Cooperation
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong stated, "We will enhance cooperation in leading sectors like space. Over 20 satellites made by Singapore have been launched by India so far. Through the memorandum of understanding aimed at promoting collaboration in the space sector, we will broaden this partnership and push the boundaries of what we can achieve together. Ultimately, both Prime Minister Modi and I emphasized that the mutual relationships between our people form the foundation of our ties. We agreed to increase exchanges, including close cooperation in citizen services.
